Back Pain No More: 5 Chair Adjustments You’re Probably Getting Wrong

We spend hours at our desks, but are we actually sitting with our chairs, or against them? If you’re finishing your day with a stiff neck or lower back pain, your chair might be set up incorrectly.

Here are 5 common mistakes and how to fix them today:

1. The "Feet in the Air" Mistake

Many people raise their chairs too high, leaving their feet dangling or tucked under the seat. This puts massive pressure on your thighs and restricts blood flow.

  • The Fix: Adjust your chair height so your feet are flat on the floor and your knees are at a 90-degree angle. If you’re shorter, use a footrest to bridge the gap.

2. Ignoring the Lumbar Gap

If there’s a space between your lower back and the chair’s backrest, your spine is carrying your full weight.

  • The Fix: Slide your hips all the way back until they touch the backrest. Adjust the lumbar support so it fits perfectly into the curve of your lower spine. This is the "secret sauce" to avoiding that 4 PM backache.

3. Armrests That Are Too High

If your armrests are pushing your shoulders up toward your ears, you’re creating tension in your neck and traps.

  • The Fix: Lower your armrests until your shoulders can relax completely. Your elbows should bend at about 90 degrees, and your forearms should be level with your desk surface.

4. The "Perched" Position

Sitting on the edge of your seat (the "perched" position) forces your back muscles to work overtime to keep you upright.

  • The Fix: Use the full depth of the seat. There should be about a 2-3 inch gap (a clenched fist's width) between the back of your knees and the edge of the seat.

5. Forgetting the Recline Tension

A stiff backrest is a common mistake. If you can’t lean back slightly, your spine stays in a rigid, stressed position.

  • The Fix: Use the tilt-tension knob under your seat. It should be loose enough to let you lean back comfortably but firm enough to support you when you sit upright.
